Public Responsibility to Vet Candidates
view | edit | list
The voting public has a responsibility, in their own self interest, to outgrow the naivete and lack of sophistication (ignorance) that contributes to indifference and apathy about the real prospects of incompetence and corruption in public service resulting from neglecting the business of properly vetting candidates for public service.
Candidates for public service should not only be willing and enthusiastic about being thoroughly vetted, but also openly support and advocate for thorough vetting and scrutiny of themselves and all candidates as a necessary demonstration of their own fitness for consideration for public office.
It is inappropriate and self destructive for a community to engage nothing more than a congeniality or simple social popularity contest for the honor of placing public trust in a candidate for an office of high responsibility. Responsible civic service deals with highly complex business and public policy issues that require extraordinary experience, expertise, and moral character that is relevant to the fiduciary trust such office involves.
The proper, appropriate, and needful vetting of candidates for public service should both involve and require public disclosure of relevant financial and business interests, conflicts of interest, campaign financing and the hopes and expectations of their major contributors, business and community service qualifications, and their understanding of and positions on relevant civic issues.
