Who cares about Aesthetics?
Most of us have been on singles websites and noticed that a common disclosure is what books or movies or music we've enjoyed. Companionship has a lot to do with sharing what we enjoy. Art and beauty are a very significant part of our comfort level as human beings. What kind of art and beauty makes you comfortable? How have you decorated your house or room? What's your favorite radio station? Do you have strong feelings about what is appropriate to be displayed in public places? How do you feel about nudity? Are you offended by nudity? How do you feel about violence? Are you offended by violence? Do you object to the exploitation of women or children or animals?
Did you watch the controversial movie, The Passion? Did you feel that the graphic display of Christ's torture was a meaningful contribution to the body of art that contributes to make the world a better place? What makes a novel a good book for you? Is graphic truth alone the standard, no matter how negative or depraved? Or, should it uplift and inspire to get your endorsement?
Clearly, compatibility in such things is essential to a healthy and enjoyable relationship between life partners. We don't all enjoy the same things. Is this area of life entirely subjective with no "better" or "worse" value to be argued. Is "taste" in such things just a matter of personal opinion which can never be held to an objective standard of values. We don't think so. Our standard of aesthetics is discriminating for a variety of good reasons that we think make us better people than we would otherwise be without such standards. How about you?
